Breaking the Silence: Tackling Gender-Based Violence Through Media
Gender-based violence affects 1 in 3 women globally, yet in many places, it remains unspoken. Survivors are silenced by shame, social norms, and fear of retaliation. The cycle of abuse continues, not because people don’t care, but because they don’t know how to talk about it.
At MECOHEDI, we believe change begins with conversation.
Our GBV-focused communication campaigns are designed to:
Raise awareness of what constitutes violence (physical, emotional, economic, sexual)
Encourage survivors to speak out and seek support
Educate communities on prevention and legal rights
Involve men and boys in dismantling harmful norms
We use radio dramas, community dialogues, and real-life survivor stories to create empathy and encourage community reflection. In areas where literacy is low, we rely on visuals, public performances, and local language storytelling to reach broader audiences.
One of our most impactful campaigns, “Speak Without Shame,” featured real voices of women who had survived abuse and now lead support circles. These stories, aired on community radio and supported by grassroots outreach, helped many women seek help for the first time.
Strategic Impact:
We don’t just run campaigns, we work with local stakeholders, legal experts, and women’s groups to ensure that awareness translates into access: to shelters, hotlines, justice, and community-based care.
Why It Matters:
When survivors know they are not alone, they begin to heal. When communities understand GBV, they begin to change. When media speaks truth, systems begin to shift.
